EU Packaging Compliance for Supplements: France, Spain & Italy

Environmental Labeling for Dietary Supplement Packaging in Europe: What Brands Need to Know

As Europe accelerates its transition toward a circular economy, environmental labeling for dietary supplement packaging has become a critical compliance requirement for food and supplement brands. France, Spain, and Italy have each introduced distinct packaging mandates—creating a fragmented regulatory landscape that can complicate distribution across multiple EU markets.

This article breaks down the key recycling requirements in each country and provides practical guidance on how supplement brands can stay compliant without sacrificing packaging consistency or brand messaging.

Key Recycling Mandates for Supplement Packaging

France

  • Requirements: Triman logo and Info-Tri sorting instructions mandatory for all household packaging
  • Symbols: Triman logo + Info-Tri graphic instructions
  • EPR System: CITEO
  • Notes: Packaging must follow CITEO rules for the format, colors, and placement of the symbols. Since March 9, 2023, all household packaging must include clear, harmonized sorting signage, with full compliance required by March 2025.

Spain

  • Requirements: Producers must register with EcoEmbes, join an approved EPR system, and provide disposal instructions
  • Symbols: No mandatory symbol; Punto Verde is optional
  • EPR System: Ecoembes
  • Notes: Royal Decree 1055/2022 is currently in force. Although Spain has announced future harmonized recycling symbols, no official design or implementation timeline has been released.

Italy

  • Requirements: Mandatory material identification code and disposal instructions in Italian
  • Symbols: No mandatory logo; CONAI mark optional
  • EPR System: CONAI
  • Notes: Environmental labeling has been mandatory since January 1, 2023, under Legislative Decree 116/2020, implementing EU Directive 2018/851.

Managing Divergent National Requirements

For brands operating across France, Spain, and Italy, a unified EU-wide environmental label is still not available. As a result, the same dietary supplement may require three different back-labels or separate packaging versions for each market.

To manage this complexity effectively, brands should:

  • Verify national obligations before printing or updating packaging
  • Maintain active registration and compliance with all applicable EPR systems
    • CITEO (France)
    • Ecoembes (Spain)
    • CONAI (Italy)
  • Ensure accurate translations and market-specific layout adjustments
  • Establish an internal review process to keep artwork aligned with changing rules
